St Faith St Martin Church of England Junior School

Music is for everyone.

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important part in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in. Besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be a highly academic and demanding subject. It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Excellence
At SFSM, we will ensure excellence in teaching and learning within a high-quality learning environment, through leadership and within all aspects of school life. We celebrate our pupils’ ability to sing and play instruments with confidence and through exciting curriculum opportunities that cover all aspects of music, including visits, we foster a deeper understanding of music.

Encouragement
We create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels happy, safe and valued; where consistent encouragement, praise and effective feedback lead to success and development in musical understanding.

Exploration
We allow children to explore through stimulating learning environments where they encounter challenging and creative learning experiences. Through the study of music from different ages, styles and cultures, our children will gain musical understanding and knowledge that impacts on their own development in the subject.

Spirituality in Music
Spirituality features in music as it provides children with an opportunity to explore and connect with their inner self and emotions in a meaningful and creative way. Through music, children can develop skills related to attention and appreciation of present moments, self-expression, and empathy towards others.

Music can provide children with the tools to explore existential concepts related to spirituality, such as the meaning of life, the nature of the universe and the significance of emotions. By exploring different genres of music, children can connect with themes related to compassion, love, hope and joy, and develop their emotional intelligence.

Music can guide children on how to tap into their inner narrative, transcendence, and connection to oneself, others and the universe.

Overall, music can help children explore their spirituality, develop their emotional maturity and empathy toward others, leading to stronger personal bonds and a deeper connection with the world around them.
